Serving up some all-American food!

For the last 5 years, Constitution Day has been celebrated on Holy Family's campus. It is an event worth commemorating, as the Constitution is very important to our nation. As a freshman this year, I was lucky enough to participate and have fun outside of the Campus Center. There were a number of activities for Constitution Day, but the most important was Voter Registration. Every vote does matter, and people kept this in mind as they filled out forms so they could vote in a very important election, only a year away from now. I prepared my registration form, and I cannot wait to get the chance to help make a decision in 2008.

At the booth for voter registration, students could also test their knowledge by answering questions from the U.S. Citizenship test. If you answered correctly, you received a fun reward: ten seconds in the Money Pit, a large box full of money. However, most of the cash was fake and only some of it was real. The catch was that air was being blown into the box, creating a whirlwind of fake cash and real money. Some winners were lucky enough to succeed in grabbing the real cash, and walked away with up to 20 dollars. I was one of the less fortunate, however, but my two dollar reward earned me some candy. Who doesn't like free, earned, and delicious candy?

If you weren't into buying candy, you could have checked out the Freedom Lunch nearby. Everyone was treated to a free meal that consisted of All-American food: potato chips, Coca-Cola, and hotdogs.

Another new event for this year was a booth to ask a question for the YouTube Republican Debate. Those interested got to sit down in front of the camera and ask their questions to the candidates of the Republican Party for the upcoming debate.

If you weren't into the food, fun, and filming outside, you could have gone into the cafeteria where a video presentation of 'Our Constitution: A Conversation' was being shown. The video, which featured U.S. Supreme Court Justices Sandra Day O'Connor and Stephen Breyer, highlighted why we have and need our constitution, among other things. While everyone wasn't thrilled about it, many students learned a thing or two. At the end of the day representatives of Holy Family gathered along with some students in a reading of the Preamble of the Constitution.

I had a lot of fun being there and meeting new people (I especially enjoyed watching students scramble around in the Money Pit) and I was glad to have received the chance to register to vote while learning a thing or two about our Constitution. I just wish I could have won more money so I could have gotten more candy.
