The event, which was established in 1988, was instated to allow more students to fund their college educations. "[The event] has steadily grown throughout the years in terms of increased participation," said Lorraine Borisuk, Development Representative of Institutional Advancement, and Project Manager of the event, "especially at the sponsorship level with the full support of the trustees of the University."
"We want to get the word out campus-wide to let everyone know what this outing has accomplished over the years, and to look back over the amount of students we have helped by giving them this aid," said Brong, who described her working on the event's committee as "one of the highlights of my job."
The funds from which the students benefit come from pledge commitments, advertisements, and donations. "The pledge commitments come from a variety of sources including donors and friends," said Borisuk. Many of the advertisers that participate are local businesses. "We try to reach out to the neighborhood businesses to participate in an attempt to invite them to become part of the university's community," said Borisk. Those advertisements are placed in a book that is distributed at the event.
"The golf classic was originally held in June, but changed in later years to October, since there were many other golf classics being held in June," said Borisk. In late May and early June, save-the-date cards will be mailed, followed by formal invitations in early July. "As we receive responses for the event, we add them to the list as a participating sponsor, advertiser, or donor," said Borisuk.
Linda DiGennaro, Director of Special Services, and second year committee member/Volunteer Leader, is "principally responsible for securing [student and faculty] volunteers, who are asked to donate their time as 'hole-watchers,'" said Borisuk.
Some participating businesses, referred to as 'hole-in-one sponsors,' contribute the cost of "insurance on a two-year lease on a new car" that will be displayed at one of the five par three holes. The golfer who hits a hole-in-one on a par three will receive the car.
